Today, like last week, is another historic day.

Not as historic mind you, but pretty good nonetheless. That’s right, Spot.us is live. The brainchild of Dave Cohn seeks to connect the community with journalism on a whole new level — the pocketbook.

Spot.us lets people pitch and gather funds so a reporter can write the story. These pieces can be republished anywhere by anyone (it’s SLIGHTLY more complicated then that, involving percentages of funding. Go to the site to get the entire spiel).

Why is this an exciting day? It’s a new model for funding journalism. With the state of the industry the way it is unique thoughts are the only way to stay afloat. Cohn’s idea was so innovative he won a Knight News Challenge grant to create Spot.us.

Thinking outside the box around corners is the only way to keep journalism alive. I’m proud to say I donated to a Spot.us funded story. I’m proud to say I plan on funding them again.

Now if only I could pitch something for Spot.us while living in Philadelphia …
