Mobile journalism kit

I decided to rummage through the things I carry with me when I’m reporting (read: all the time). For those curious few who didn’t click the link I’ve got the image — untagged — below:

Basically if I’m inĀ  wireless hotspot I can publish anything either to my college’s newspaper site, this blog or anywhere else. I’ve got everything I currently need but here’s what I’d like to add or change:

  • Smartphone: Simplicity, mobility and I can cut the kit down in a pinch, and I can dump the planner. Currently interested in either an iPhone or a Nokia n96 which I’ve been scouring over online.
  • Camera: I love the compact nature of my Coolpix but I’m looking to move to higher quality and more functionality, Nikon’s D40x kit should work.
  • Voice recorder: I’m a sucker for audio — slideshows, podcasts, transcripts … it’s a nice addition. Looking at an Edirol R-09 with a microphone for now, possibly a Samson H2 for quick stuff and portability.
  • Digital Videocamera: This is where it gets tricky. I’m sure I can find a ton of uses for this thing but there’s a few problems: A. I can’t afford one that has all the features I want B. I don’t know a thing about good video storytelling. Probably the last addition to my bag-o’-tricks.

So there we have it, a student with no budget and his ever-present tools to gather and present information. What tools do you use in a mobile-reporting situation?
