Using platforms for more than new tools

What platforms do you get your information from? Sounds like a simple question right? Then why did a guy talking about journalism trends stump an audience for a few minutes with it?

Randy Parker from the York Daily Record had a group of journalism students and professors staring at him throwing up traditional answers.

After a few minutes we broke away from simple stuff like newspapers and books and radio or TV. Eventually I mentioned Twitter and explained how I use it.

The basic list included a lot of things I use and the crowd didn’t seem to know much about including:

  • RSS feeds
  • Twitter
  • Google Maps
  • Databases
  • Social networking
  • Social bookmarking
  • Blogs
  • YouTube
  • Flickr
  • well you get the idea …

After we made this list I started thinking about how I use these things as a journalist. I’ve discovered that it keeps me up to date on new technologies like Vuvox. I’m basically getting more tools for storytelling, not actual sources or ideas.

What am I doing wrong?
