Strong animation makes graphics effective

Do graphics make the story? Or do you still need to have good writing supplemented by the graphics?

I recently came across an infographic on the extinction of languages. It’s a simple graphic; easy to navigate, easy to read and effectively presents a lot of information. Since I’m new to the creation of graphics like that I’m going to make an assumption that it’s flash and say that I’m going to spend my summer learning to create graphics like that.

Beyond strong flash graphics I’ve started to poke around with Adobe Illustrator, sparked in part by Macworld’s post on five great tutorials.

The one how-to that caught my eye involved creating road maps. It looks simple but I have a strange feeling I’ll be staring at a bunch of horrible Illustrator files until I get one worth including with a story.

As usual with any of my endeavors into the field I’ll be posting either links or upload files chronicling my trials and tribulations. Besides it should be fun to watch me flail around for a few weeks.
