WGA strike over, journalism took a hit

As the writers strike ends Jack Bauer fans can start rejoicing along with Academy Awards junkies (maybe we can actually have some real jokes at an awards show!).

Now that Americans can get back to seeing if Meredith and whats-his-name on Grey’s Anatomy get back together the media can start picking through the new WGA contract to see who came out ahead and who got burned.

But as journalism blogger Yoni Greenbaum discussed earlier today — the media itself took a hard hit during the three month strike.

News outlets reported on the strike, some even let users give feedback on how they coped without new episodes. But what did these media outlets do to take advantage of the opening?

Where were the sites offering interactive content, the things to do when you can’t get your fix from Wysteria Lane? It certainly wasn’t at an online news site.

With the news media constantly taking hits on revenue forcing layoffs it’s amazing that there weren’t more people at media outlets jumping on the three-month vacuum to get a better share of the market.

Sam Zell might have it right, journalism has to give readers what they want (entertainment) and make money so they can get what they need.
